WordPress Video Solution Framework for WPMU

Automattic has just released a wpmu plugin for a video framework for your own WPMU install. From the plugin page:

The package contains video solutions framework, including transcoder and administration interface utilities, written in PHP. The code was developed by Automattic Inc, and powers wordpress.com video solutions.
We hereby make it open source project so that you can reuse it, build upon it, and share with the community.

The solution is a WPMU plugin. However it can not be used as “out-of-the-box” type because it also depends on your file serving infrastructure, and your URL schemes. Customize your pieces, then you have a full-fledged video solution. Or you can just reuse the individual components such as video player or transcoder.

This seems really really interesting.

    Andrea,

Nice find, I will be playing with this shortly. A video solution for WPMu is an insanely cool thing–thanks for this.

  2. Sean says:

I have been working at getting it to work since about an hour after it was released. Proving a bit difficult, especially since the documentation is very lacking, and requires much ‘hard coded configuration.’

What is perplexing is the *example* transcoder configuration file, which states:

    # you need to download and compile ffmpeg and qu-faststart tools, and other
    # auxiliary tools. The following sample script does most of the things.

    ‘Other’ auxillary tools?

Will post back when I have it up and running on my test environment.

I also forgot to mention the SQL thet include on it’s extend->installation page is incorrect. For some reason the underscores were removed; ‘blog_id’ is “blogid” and leaving it like so will cause errors.

the _ in the wiki have turned the id itatic use the SQL in the readme

I am with you. I got stuck on step 2. I hacked through step one and found the error as you did. Now, step 2 is even more cryptic. Can someone record a screencast, plz! kthxbai

    I second the need for a screencast………

I don’t even know where to start on this. Of course, that usually means that I should let it go, but that hasn’t stopped me yet.

it’s pathetic, they take 5 years to develop such stupidity, I really can’t understand these coders on Linux, they fail to mention this framework is built on Linux using Linux syntax and not compatible with windows servers that run word-press.

from my understanding, you will probably need to compile all codecs example ffmpeg , audio codec fly-tools etc

the documentation is simply disgrace, its truly stupid even if its open sourced.

” transcoder-config.sh ” this bash script does most of the things you need, i assume you probably need to run this and have everything installed on your Linux box, before you try to make MySQL database and import the tables shown in the article by the developers.

its truly piece of shat ! these type of projects makes me hate linux even more.

To be fair “Framework” usually means that it speeds up developing your solution and is not an ‘out of the box’ solution.

As a new member to the Buddy Press community am hoping this is something I can contribute to, it looks very interesting and worthwhile if it works as it should …. will add a lot of value as a one stop solution for non techies out there…

I am currently compiling the libraries and implementing the framework on my WPMU, Buddypress and BBPress etc if I get it working in the next few days I will happily create a screencast….. I have had some experience back in 99 building and compiling dvd streamers and early vlc stuff as an individual.. am confident I can get this working on my centos build… windows users need to wait for a released binary to make this work…

Hello all. I’m taking the plunge and migrating from Joomla to WordPress MU. I have several extensions that I want to translate to WP. One of them is a multimedia video solution that incorporates various audio and video conversions (H.264, FFMPEG, etc.), supporting FLV, MP3 and MP4 playback. The solution I have works perfectly

Do you know of a good WP API reference? If so, I’d love to get my multimedia extension recoded into WP. Thanks!

  14. hi, i am unable to find the WordPress Video Framework plugin. can you please help me out to try it on my BP+WPMU.
