I would definetley wait for 3.0 which is due very very soon (last I heard was late may). From what I have seen multiple user will be much easier in 3.0 (it's been integrated into the core).

For what you want, install the 3.0 beta and work from that. MU is now dead in the water, and 3.0 is so close to release you may as well start there now. That is hands down the easiest.

Thanks for the post. It's been a few months (now May 31st), what's the latest on this question? I'd like to do one install for wordpress with MU and BuddyPress capabilities. (I want to avoid handling the innards if I can.)

Well, it is a priority for those on exisiting MU installs to be able to upgrade to 3.0 pretty smoothly. Pay attention to the WP trac and you'll see the changes as they are made.

But yeah, it's also a god time to clean house. :D

I'm not personally building any new sites until 3.0 is released. I don't see the point in investing time into a project and building a site to possibly find out that work I've done isn't compatible.

I figure this is a good time to go through other sites and clean house and fix up while I wait for 3.0

This must be a frequent question. I started on WPMU 2.9RC1 because I wanted BP and then found I could use BP on WP, which is what I wanted all along.

I'm afraid BP won't work (at least with it's plugins) on WP and hesitate to run multiple softwares all on trunk.

Do we know whether BP1.2 will officially support 2.9 or did Andy just turn on the ability without testing?

After going through the setup process for MU on a localhost.localdomain, I've learned alot, but if I can switch in a week or two to BP 1.2 and have BP plugins and core work, that might be a wise choice.

Thoughts?
BTW, I'm developing for myself and my timeline is flexible, but because I'm new, I can't afford to just wait around. I need to develop on something.

That's an excellent idea, I'm always up for having some fun with Wordpress. I might have to give it a shot.

WOW the thought has been floating in my head all week, there is a new project I want to work on and I had picked WPMU for it but after all these news,I had kinda left it in the back burner and instead began to make the existing ones (on WP) work better so I can reach the ¨autopilot¨state with them.
I am very new at WPMU and I kinda abandoned it a couple of days ago when it got complicated and things were not working as I wanted them to. And then I the merge made it even scarier
On the other hand this new project could mean a relevant new income for me..

Thanks for the post...

On the flip side of that, if you're looking for "fun" and want to help out, now would be a good time to learn how to do a local install and work from trunk as a tester. :)

I think this is a question a lot of web designers are wrestling with right now. For me, the need for Wordpress MU is just for fun so I can wait, but like you said, if you have income waiting on it, install now!
